Why grind instead of leaving the stump

Leftover stumps in Brisbane, Ipswich and Logan attract termites, damage mower blades and get in the way of new landscaping. Grinding mulches the bulk of the stump and major roots close to the surface, which stops most species from reshooting while avoiding the wider disturbance of full excavation on tight lots.

We match the grinder head to the stump diameter, rock content in the soil and how close the stump sits to walls, pools and services. Shallow utilities are located by dial-before-you-dig processes where required, and we adjust depth to suit your next step — turf, pavers, or a replacement tree in a new position.

What is involved

We clear rocks and loose debris from the grind zone, set guards to limit chip throw, then work in passes until the agreed depth is met. Fluff from the grind is raked back into the hole or removed off site depending on your preference. Larger surface roots can be chased along the ground where they lift pavers or trip visitors.

If a stump sits on a retaining wall or boundary, we discuss how far we can go without undermining footings, and we can leave a cosmetic cap if engineering advice says to stop short of full depth.

What to expect on the day

Expect engine noise for a focused block of time rather than all day. We will ask you to keep pets and kids clear of the immediate area while the cutter wheel is spinning. When we finish, the area is levelled off and any grindings you want kept are piled neatly for your gardener to spread.

Benefits

  • Removes a favourite harbour point for termites near weatherboard and hardwood decks.
  • Frees space for new planting without old cambium tissue fighting your sapling.
  • Keeps footpaths and body corporate common areas safer for pedestrians.

Common questions

How deep do you grind?

Typical residential jobs target 200–300 mm below surrounding ground level so you can top-dress and turf. Deeper passes may be needed before paving or structural footings — we quote depth explicitly so your concreter knows what they are pouring onto.

Will the tree grow back after grinding?

Most species stop reshooting once the main root collar is ground out. Vigorous suckering species sometimes need a follow-up treatment or minor spot excavation — we will tell you if your species is notorious for that around SEQ.

Can you grind near pool plumbing?

We keep a buffer to flexible pool lines and use hand tools near known PVC runs. If plans are missing, we slow down and expose by hand rather than risk a hydraulic line strike — cheaper than draining a pool to fix a split return.

Client review

Highly recommend. Prompt punctual professional service from start to finish. Came to quote quickly on tree removal and stump grinding on two trees and did the job professionally within a week at a very reasonable cost. Dale kept us informed the whole way.
